Green in Orange

We are moving to Orange County. I feel like a pioneer, venturing forth from San Francisco, the territory ahead uncharted. Will we have to build our own compost bin if the city doesn’t collect food scraps? Will the neighborhood association let us keep a chicken coop? How far will we have to bike to find wild places for the kids to get muddy? Can Colorado River water compare to that of the Tuolumne? There are answers to these questions. But the one that burns: will there be room there for all of me?

I'm looking for the green in Orange. Excited for that adventure. At the same time, I'm standing like the new girl at the edge of the playground, tracing a circle with the toe of my shoe. Will there be a place for me?

  1. I feel for you. As someone who cherishes her city subsidized compost bins and talks to her worms, I can relate. It's just part of what I love so much about the Bay Area (that Toulumne water's pretty sweet too!) Last week I got so excited that I could take my collected snails to the neighbors chickens & ducks, no longer having to feel the guilt of killing them myself... nay, i was actually fostering the cycle of life!!

I can't wait to hear more about your transition... Good luck!

  2. Thank you for this comment. I am excited to find our way there. I know there is a web of people throughout southern California committed to sustainable living. I am determined to find those people. I love the idea of gathering that circle around me, expanding that circle out. I plan to start our search for it later this summer.

I recognize her and know that there is magic in her movement.
